We slept like the dead last night after getting about 4 hours of
sleep on Monday night to get up at 4:40 am to get to the airport to fly
to Corpus Christi yesterday morning and dumped our luggage at our motel
and then went birding until the end of the day. So last evening we were very tired and
so we had no trouble falling asleep. Today was very windy. We started
in the western end of the city and visited under a highway underpass
for Cave Swallows which were really pretty sitting on nests. This was
at the boat ramp at LaBonte Park. From there we went to Hazel Bazemore
County Park where we had some lovely shorebirds: Long-billed Curlew and ,Western Kingbird, American Avocet, Wilson's Phalarope, Blue-winged Teal and Black-necked
Stilt.
From there we went on to the South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center where we had lunch and did a couple of long trails hoping to see some birds. It was real dry there and the mudflats had dried up and birds were limited. The place was beautiful though.
Blucher Park was next was next where we got some lifers. This is a four acre city block park with some different habitats and tons of birds. On a square foot basis, it is an oasis for birds. Very difficult to get to it and we asked for directions and the whole neighbourhood is kind of sketchy and I guess challenging but once one is parked and the car is securely locked up, there are only birds to pay attention to. It is a super place and well worth the effort. We had some lifers here, it was a Least Tern, Cave Swallow, Western Kingbird and Wilson's Phalarope. For me it was a Lincoln's Sparrow. We met many birders today and some of them were local and really gave us a lot of birding information.
From Blucher Park Paradise we went on to the Hans and Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge right on the Gulf. It was pretty deserted and very hot there and we looked around and did not see any different birds. By then it got dark and we came back to the hotel and had some excellent Mexican food at the restaurant next door.
Now we are going through our bird lists and talking about our highlights. We are moving on tomorrow to Aransas and it. should be exciting. Time for bed.
